There is a curious fallacy embedded in the 'progressives' called historicism. Broadly, it is the notion, (not idea), that history is a process of continual improvement and perfection, hence the tinkering we see from the nanny state. Tied in with this is an inchoate belief that human nature is perfectable. (Once, at a counter-protest to the anti-loonies, I asked one of them if human nature was perfectable. After the brief deer-headlights pause, when he said "Yes, I guess so", I pointed out the very despicable company he had just put himself in alignment with, Pol Pot, Stalin et. al.) The popular slogan reprssentative of historicism is used by Toyota to sell cars, "Toyota, moving forward". When this belief is deeply entrenched, all opposition to it is seen not just as an opposing idea, but as evil. In a battle with evil, ideas are unnecessary, and slogans and loud shouts suffice. For example, note the screaming and rainbow-flag waving of the homosexual activists when the Catholic Church declines to change what they believe about these proclivities, so as to make nice and let sinners into the club, with no need to repent. When anyone or anything is standing in the way of perfection on earth, watch out. Leo Strauss speaks far more eloquently on this that I.
